- A level (or at the very least the level app on your phone)

- A pencil (for marking the points on the wall)
Keep the Width in Mind
You’re going to want to select a curtain rod that is wider than the width of your window. This way, you avoid your curtains or drapes covering the window when they are pulled to the sides.
Plus, it gives your window a sort of positive optical illusion; a longer curtain rod than the window actually makes the window appear bigger in the room. A good rule of thumb is to buy curtain rods eight to twelve inches wider than the window.
Get the Right Length
Unless you’ve purchased café-style drapes that you plan on intentionally touching the floor, you’re going to want them to sit about an inch above the floor. Not only does this avoid having to deal with dirt and hair they might pick up, but it also gives the curtains a cleaner look to the room.
Bear in mind that the higher you place your elegant curtains or drapes the taller your windows will look.
